germina classics 2014

The shoe and fashion-brand GERMINA CLASSICS have their roots in the East-German era sporting gear industry. GERMINA CLASSICS were founded in 1970 by a state-run sports equipment company in the town of Schmalkalden, in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

By the end of the 70's, GERMINA had become the biggest and best-known provider of sports equipment, camping gear, sportswear and, perhaps most famously, trainers, throughout East Germany.

In the mid-70’s, these trainers were released for the first time with the double stripes that would soon become known throughout the Eastern-Bloc countries as a mark of status and prestige.

Then, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, international products flooded the Eastern-Bloc and the GERMINA brand found itself competing with the sleek marketing machines from the west. Despite which, the brand continue to thrive by specialising in the arena of winter sports products.

The brand GERMINA CLASSICS was then re-established in 2001, this time capitalising on the retro aesthetic, rearticulating its target audience. GERMINA CLASSICS had returned, with the trade mark, original logos and permission to employ the double stripe - optimal conditions for the continuation of a successful tradition. A new product line was established in 2003 with retro designs from the 70's and 80's.
